The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh is the head of the state government. The Chief Minister is appointed based on the majority party (or coalition) elected in the Legislative Assembly and typically serves a term of five years.
Before Bharat (India) became a republic, the state was known as the United Provinces. The heads of government at that time were called Prime Ministers of the United Provinces. On 24 January 1950, the United Provinces was officially renamed Uttar Pradesh.
